Elevator Compliance and Testing

Elevator Technology, Inc. (ETI) has a positive relationship with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for elevator permitting and compliance in Northern California: State of California (DIR, DOSH) Elevator Ride and Tramway Unit

We routinely assist our clients in navigating the Code-required testing and compliance of their elevator systems. This includes a full understanding of the governing Code sections in the State of California:

  • Group II (California Title 8) – For elevators first permitted prior to September 1998
  • Group III (ANSI A17.1 – 1996) – For elevators first permitted between September 1998 and July 2008
  • Group IV (ANSI A17.1 – 2004) – For Elevator first permitted after July 2008

The State Inspector will provide a once per year unannounced routine annual elevator inspection and the Division will mail the inspection invoice and any inspection report requirements. This inspection report is called a Preliminary Order and gives the building owner 45 days to complete the work. Clearance for any inspection report work MUST be submitted by a licensed and qualified elevator company. The work (or supervision of work) to complete any requirements MUST be completed by a Certified Competent Conveyance Mechanic (CCCM).

If the State does not receive qualified compliance documentation prior to the Preliminary Order compliance date, they will mail a second notice called an “Order to Correct Unsafe Conditions or Show Cause.” This order provides a 30-day compliance window, which if not met will result in a $675 per elevator penalty and possible accompanying “red-tag” of the elevator removing it from building use.

Elevator Technology, Inc. has a stellar track record of meeting compliance dates and working with our clients to navigate them successfully through the compliance process. Please be sure to email us your inspection reports as quickly as you receive them to give everyone as much time as possible being deadlines arrive.
